Health Conscious Crims
You might think most shoplifters would have their eyes on DVDs, MP3 Players and digital cameras, but it appears today's criminal has turned health conscious as the Canadian health food industry reports a worrying trend in their stores.
Canadian health stores have seen a dramatic rise in thefts from their stores, especially with high end products and have had to now move certain products behind the counter, just as cigarettes and alcohol have found themselves there in regular stores.
In the case of Mikei Red Reishi capsules, a high end health product said to boost general wellbeing and help with a host of problems from stress to bad skin, stores are reporting nearly a third of their stock going missing.
Kimber Bradbury of Health Express says, “We've never seen a nutritional supplement product hold more interest with shoplifters. Before we moved the product off the shelf and put it behind the counter, we would see almost a third of the inventory get stolen every month!”
Finlandia Natural Pharmacy founder Harlan Lahti has similar comments. “I don't know whether it's the expensive looking green and gold packaging or the price point, but we've had to take unusual security measures to make sure the product is not stolen- we have had to move the Mikei behind the counter.”
It is perhaps not surprising that thieves have now begun heavily targeting the health industry with the vitamins, minerals and supplements industry now worth $20.3 billion a year. In it still unclear however has to whether thieves are stealing the goods to sell or to help them sleep deficiency, stress and to recover from short bouts of physical activity!
