Low carb diets could cut heart energy
Scientists from Oxford University have found that high fat, low carbohydrate diets can reduce energy to the heart. The university team say more research is needed and it is unclear at this stage whether this could have a damaging long term impact on health.
Many people have lost weight quickly by following such diets, which became very popular after a number of high profile celebrities admitted to following so called "low carb" diets. In general the diets allowed the consumption of relatively high amounts of fat and protein while at the same time reducing the intake of carbohydrates. But the popularity of these type of diets has decreased and scientists fear they may not be good for health in the longer term.
The Oxford University study monitored 19 people over a two week period and found that the energy stored in the heart was reduced by an average of 16% (but in some cases up to 33%) among those who followed the high fat, low carb diet. It is reported that one of the participants even noticed he could not manage his daily run while on the diet. The study noted that the changes were reversed within two weeks after returning to a normal diet
